FAQ
What information do you need to quote an injection mold?
Send the 3D part model, dimensioned 2D drawing, resin grade, color and finish requirements, annual volume, expected product life, preferred cavity count, critical tolerances, target molding machine, and desired T1 date. If some items are not final, provide your commercial volume forecast and application requirements. We can then recommend a practical plastic injection mold design and identify the assumptions included in the quote.
How is injection mold tooling cost calculated?
Injection mold tooling cost depends on part size and complexity, cavity count, mold steel, expected tool life, runner and hot-runner system, slides or lifters, cooling design, tolerance, surface finish, and validation scope. A production mold should be evaluated against cycle time, maintenance, expected volume, and part cost—not only the initial tool price. Our proposal is based on the tooling configuration required for your production target.
How long does it take to build a custom injection mold and receive T1 samples?
The schedule depends on design readiness, mold size, complexity, steel and component availability, machining, assembly, and validation requirements. After DFM and mold design review, we provide project milestones from design approval and steel cutting through mold assembly, T1 sampling, corrections, and final approval. Sharing a required T1 date at the RFQ stage helps us evaluate capacity and identify schedule risks early.
Do you provide DFM and Moldflow analysis before mold manufacturing?
Yes. Our front-loaded engineering reviews manufacturability, wall thickness, draft, shrinkage, parting lines, gates, runners, ejection, cooling, tolerance, and mold actions before steel is cut. Moldflow analysis is used when needed to evaluate filling balance, warpage, venting, and temperature behavior. This early work helps reduce repeated tool corrections and creates a more stable transition into injection molding production.
How do you choose mold steel and the expected mold life?
Mold steel and component specifications are selected according to resin abrasiveness or corrosiveness, annual volume, required tool life, part finish, tolerance, cycle time, and maintenance conditions. Multi-cavity injection molds and demanding engineering materials may require a different construction from low-volume tools. We document the proposed tooling configuration and expected operating requirements for review before manufacturing begins.
How do you test and validate a new injection mold?
We evaluate the first trial against the approved design and engineering assumptions, including filling balance, warpage, venting, temperature control, mold movement, and part dimensions. After initial corrections, molds typically complete a continuous 2–4-hour run to check part quality and production stability over time. The final sampling and inspection package is defined according to your drawing and approval requirements.
Who owns the mold, and can it be transferred or maintained?
Mold ownership, storage, preventive maintenance, repair responsibility, documentation, and transfer terms should be stated in the quotation and purchase agreement. Tell us at the RFQ stage if the injection mold must run at another facility or follow a specific customer tooling standard. We can then review machine compatibility, mold-base and component requirements, export preparation, and the handover documentation needed for your project.
